After you complete the setup, you can wander around the site, but you are very limited unless you become a paying member. You can search, browse profiles and see photos, and create "hot lists" of the members that strike your fancy. You can find matches on the site, or have them sent to you via email. Other members can IM (instant message) you, and you can also "tease" other members. A tease is a pre-written message you can send, you may pick from one of several messages. This site is fast, slick, and works well. However, it has very limited functionality unless you are a paid member. You may have some fun if someone else initiates contact, but otherwise this is a very limited site for free usage.
